UCSB AWM (Association for Women in Math)

AWM POWERS Day - Saturday, February 23, 2019

All female middle school students and math teachers are invited to a free day of fun STEM activities at UCSB! The UCSB AWM (Association for Women in Math) Student Chapter is hosting POWERS Day (which stands for Problem sOlving for Women to Encourage Research in STEM). The activities will include fun seminars in physics, math, and statistics, lunch at the lagoon, and more! See the event website for more information, including a schedule and how to apply.

Two UCSB Mathematics faculty members named AMS Fellows

Hector D. Ceniceros and Zhenghan Wang have been named as American Mathematical Society Fellows for 2019. The Fellows of the AMS designation recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics. Hector and Zhenghan join 14 previously named fellows in the UC Santa Barbara Mathematics Department, including 4 Emeritus Professors and 10 (now 12) current faculty members.

Davit Harutyunyan

Davit Harutyunyan Awarded Emil Artin Junior Prize

Harutyunyan was chosen for his paper “Gaussian Curvature as an Identifier of Shell Rigidity" which appeared in Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis (2017).

RTG in Topology and Geometry to offer lectures by Gunther Uhlmann

The RTG in Topology and Geometry will be offering lectures by Gunther Uhlmann, University of Washington, in February.

  • February 14, 2018 - Flying A Studios Room, UCenLecture 1: "Harry Potter's Cloak via Transformation Optics"
  • February 15, 2018 - Flying A Studios Room, UCenLecture 2: "Journey to the Center of the Earth"
  • February 16, 2018 - Broida Hall 1640Lecture 3: "Seeing Through Space Time"

Nancy Scherich wins Dance Your Ph.D. contest

Nancy Scherich, a Ph.D. student in the Mathematics Department at UCSB, has won Science Magazine's annual Dance Your Ph.D. contest.  Her entry illustrated her research into braid group theory through aerial interpretive dance.  Click through to the complete article for a YouTube video of her performance.  Congratulations, Nancy!

Yitang Zhang

Yitang Zhang wins award from AAEOY program

Professor Yitang Zhang has been recognized with a Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award from the Asian American Engineer of the Year (AAEOY) 2018 Award program.
 
This award is used to honour persons who serve as role models and a source of inspiration for Asian American engineers and scientists. Previous Distinguished Award recipients (a total of 35 in the last fifteen years) include Dr. Shuji Nakamura, Nobel Laureate in Physics, Manjul Bhargava 2014 Fields Medalist and Dr. Henry Yang, our chancellor.
