Required text

A Concise Introduction to Pure Mathematics, Third Edition, by Martin Liebeck.

Lectures

MWF 10-10:50 in Girv 1115

Prerequisites

Either Math 3B, 3C, 5A, 5B, or 5C, with a grade of B or better.

Homework

Homework will generally be turned in at the first discussion session of the following week. For example, the homework listed below for 1/9-1/13 is due at the discussion session on Tuesday 1/17

No late homework will be accepted. Do all problems assigned.  Not all will be graded. Please resist looking up the answer in the back of the book; that does nobody any good. Feel free to work with each other on the problems, but please then write them up on your own. Teaching Assistant Teddy Einstein will be posting detailed solutions as the homework is due.

Discussion sections

There are two discussion periods a week. (Check with GOLD for the latest information on discussion section time and location.)

At least one of the discussion sections will be a problem day: You will be expected to work problems assigned for homework on the board for the benefit of your classmates. Pick your favorite problem(s), and be prepared to defend your arguments.

Per departmental policy, attendance at your assigned discussion section is mandatory.  The following penalty applies:  If you miss three discussion sections, your grade will be lowered by 1/3 (i. e. B+ becomes B, B- becomes C+).  For each further three missed, your grade will be lowered another 1/3 of a grade.

Exceptions:  If your course grade is an A or an A+, these penalties do not apply.
