Abstract: Cheshire Cat Principle: Quantum groups are not groups at all, but what remains of algebras of functions on them after the groups have faded away. Thus, the subject is part of noncommutative algebra, although with a strong flavor of different classes of groups. I will concentrate on algebraic groups, but one will only need to be familiar with SL_2(C).
