Joint work with Ian Agol. We find that every closed 3-manifold smoothly embedded in R^4 is isotopic to a special position: each generic cross-section is a Heegaard decomposition. This has the surprising consequence that all embeddings can be realized with a unique local max and local min. When the three manifold to be imbedded is S^3 we find a way of expressing the Schoenflies conjecture in terms of generalized Georitz groups.
