A classical problem in geometry is to find out whether a sphere admits a vector field that is nonzero at every point. The answer is "yes" if and only if the dimension of the sphere is odd. I will discuss this result, give an overview of the general problem of counting linearly independent vector fields on spheres, and survey some of the tools that go into the solution.
