The Mathematics Department and
the
Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara seek applications for a full-time
career lecturer position with potential security of employment. This is a joint position, split between the
departments with an effective start date of July 1, 2010. This Lecturer position is part of the Science and
Mathematics Initiative (SMI), a UC-wide program for increasing the number and quality of secondary science and
mathematics teachers in California. (See

Duties and Responsibilities: The lecturer will teach nine quarter courses per year (or the equivalent) split between the two departments. In Mathematics, these courses will be primarily in the upper division core of the BA with an emphasis in high school teaching. (See http://math.ucsb.edu/ugrad/MathBA09.pdf .) In the School of Education, these will be the lower division mathematics education courses for undergraduate SMI students.
Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a doctorate in mathematics and demonstrate potential excellence in teaching at the university level. Interest in working with K-12 teachers and students, and in mentoring future mathematics teachers are essential as well. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.

Ky Fan Visiting Scholar
This is a two-year visiting position with possibility of renewal
for a third year.
Candidates in all areas of pure & applied mathematics will be considered.
The position carries a research stipend & teaching load of 4.5 one-quarter courses per year.
Selection will be based primarily on research achievement, but documented evidence of good teaching is necessary & departmental research
priorities will be taken into account. This appointment begins on July 1, 2010. Candidates must possess a Ph.D by September 2010.
